What do you get when you combine a vibrant and bustling community with stunning scenery and the great outdoors?

The perfect place for rest, relaxation and recharging – say hello to Minden Hills!

Located in Haliburton County, the town boasts an incredibly lively spirit, where adventure awaits around every corner. In fact, Minden has been recognized as one of the friendliest towns in Ontario.

So, it comes as no surprise that the area inspired legendary Canadian band, The Tragically Hip, to write an iconic song.

The Tragically Hip - Bobcaygeon

Named after the town Bobcaygeon, in the Kawartha Lakes region, the song narrates the life of a police officer who’s stress from work leaves him wondering whether or not he should quit and embark on a new career.

Fortunately, he finds the idyllic community of Bobcaygeon, where he and a loved one are able to unwind, leaving behind the pressures of work. The chorus embodies the serenity of the area as the song's narrator watches "the constellations/reveal themselves one star at a time", a sharp contrast from the views he sees while working: "dull and hypothetical" skies that are "falling one cloud at a time".

While the song was released in February of 1999, it had already won a Juno for Single Of The Year by 2000!

Beloved by many Canadians, as you visit Minden Hills, you’re guaranteed to hear The Hip blaring from cottagers docks and boats.

Let the melody take you away!

The rich history of Minden didn’t start with The Hip, although the band certainly helped it rise to prominence.

Discover The History Of Minden

The town, which was named after a neighborhood in Germany, was actually first surveyed in 1858. Prior to that, the settlement was referred to as Gull River.

Following Bobcaygeon road, settlers were drawn to the area courtesy of its abundant timber resources. Nestled on the banks of Gull River, loggers took advantage of the flowing stream to move timber in the 19th and 20th centuries.

As of the 1940s, Minden Hills has grown increasingly in popularity as a summer destination, attracting cottagers from larger cities throughout Southern Ontario.

In fact, the population of the town grows significantly during summer months as tourists flock to the area.

If you’d like to learn more about the varied history of Minden, a trip to the Minden Hill Museum is certainly in order!

Bringing local history to life since 1984, the museum helps to paint a vivid picture of the lives of locals nearly 150 years ago, when logging was the prominent economy.
