Many love the Muskoka Lakes region for its gorgeous scenery and outdoor recreation—and what better way to enjoy the area than by canoe or kayak? This fun, outdoor activity can be enjoyed by those of all ages, and offers a chance to explore the various lakes and islands in the area from a different perspective.

Although the Muskoka Lakes region is home to a staggering number of lakes—over 1,500—we’ve limited our list to spots that are. If you're thinking of taking the canoe or kayak out on the water to explore, here is our list of some of the best, and unique, spots in the region.

Turtle Lake

Gravenhurst is home to a number of large, beautiful lakes, including the centrally-located Gull Lake and the equally-gorgeous Morrison Lake. Turtle Lake is situated west of downtown Gravenhurst, adjacent to Loon Lake.

Turtle Lake is known for its tranquil scenery, which makes this a great option for non-motorized boats, as well as its warm water during the summertime. Canoes and kayaks can be launched from the spot on North Loon Lake Road, and this location features lovely scenery and an abundance of wildlife—especially around the marsh area.

While the trip is relatively beginner-friendly, Turtle Lake connects to Loon Lake in the north, and more ambitious explorers can canoe or kayak around this lake, too. The combined distance is around thirteen kilometres.

(Lower) Oxtongue River

Located east of Huntsville in the community of Dwight, this is a little bit more of a challenging trip for canoers and kayakers. Beginning at Dwight Beach on Dwight Bay, continue south around the eastern edge until you reach the Oxtongue River. This area is marked by buoys.

From there, boaters will wind through the beautiful landscape, ending at Marshs Falls, just before Highway 35. During the autumn, the lush forest around the river changes colour beautifully. However, the summertime brings all sorts of wildlife and plants, including water lilies on the swamp-like outer edges.

Three Legged Lake at The Massasauga Provincial Park

West of Horseshoe Lake is the outdoor escape of The Massasauga Provincial Park. This protected area is recognized for its incredible views and wildlife—which includes everything from large birds of prey to bears.

The area in and of itself is recognized as an incredible camping and boating destination. Canoeing and kayaking on Three Legged Lake (and the connecting Spider Lake—access by portage only) can be a lengthy excursion, but this is up to the adventurer. There are also several campsites around the park, for those who wish to make a multi-day excursion.

Three Legged Lake’s access point/boat launch can be found off of 3 Legged Lake Road.

There are so many lakes and rivers to explore in the Muskoka Lakes region. Discover what the area has to offer with a canoe or kayak tour of the natural Ontario landscapes!
