Haliburton County History

The area of Haliburton County was originally known for its thriving lumber industry, from the middle of the 19th century through to the beginning of the 20th. Many of the original mills of this period were built along the waterways due to the ease of transport these afforded for logs harvested in the area.

The county was first organized in 1874, put together from parts of Victoria County, Peterborough County, and Nipissing District. The county was named after Thomas Chandler Haliburton, who was the first chairman of the Canadian Land and Emigration Company.
