When cold weather hits, we might be eager to cozy up and stay indoors. While Ontario’s premier cottage country is the perfect place to sit by the fire and sip on some hot chocolate, these hikes are sure to keep you warm even on the chilliest of days!

As not all trails are maintained come winter, it’s important to know which paths remain safe, no matter the season. So, keep reading to learn more!

Limberlost Forest

An excellent choice for winter hikes, this Muskoka hot-spot is open to the public year round, and is even free to visit! With over 20 lakes and multiple trails to choose from, you certainly shouldn’t skip Solitaire Lake Trail.

Solitaire Lake Trail:

This 6.3 kilometer loop is moderately trafficked and can be found near Lake of Bays. Featuring a lake, this trail is considered moderate and is accessible year round. You can hike, bike, run, or even tackle the terrain in snowshoes – the choice is yours!

Arrowhead Provincial Park

Another great place for winter activities is Arrowhead Provincial Park, and the Stubb Falls Loop shouldn’t be overlooked!

Stubb Falls Loop:

This moderately trafficked trail loop is 2.6 kilometers long and is located in Huntsville. You can look forward to scenic lake views, and as the hike isn’t a very challenging one, it’s great for all skill levels – so you can even bring the young ones along with you!

Lions Lookout Trail:

Located in downtown Huntsville, which is actually the largest town in Muskoka, you can look forward to many local gems.

One lucky find worth mentioning is the Lions Lookout Trail.

As you walk alongside the Muskoka River, you’ll enjoy views of the historic railroad track as well as Fairy Lake. Discover the famous cliff top lookout, which offers amazing views of the town and allows you to enjoy a different perspective of Fairy Lake.

While the trail is only 1.5 kilometres in length, it does have some steep inclines which accounts for its moderate difficulty ranking.

Hunters Bay Trail:

Another Huntsville hike worth mentioning is Hunter Bay Trail. 4.6 kilometres in length one way, this moderate hike allows you to take in the beauty that the bay has to offer.

Starting at the Centre Street bridge, the trail winds along the river and provides some pretty incredible sights to soak in.

Hardy Lake Provincial Park

While summer seasons often make this area extremely busy, winter brings with it peace and serenity. With parking plowed all winter long, it’s easy to reach this wonderful location. Almost 9 kilometers in length, your furry friends can keep you company as long as they remain on leash!

Huckleberry Rock Lookout Trail:

This wonderful destination gives you a blast from the past! Recognized locally for over 100 years as an iconic lookout, you’ll find some of the oldest rocks in the world in the area.

Huckleberry Rock is also one of the best places to catch some of the majestic sunsets the Muskoka region has become known for.

The 2.9 kilometre trail is quite popular so it remains heavily trafficked while offering scenic views, and is perfect for all skill levels.
